Visual methodologies as effective tools in reflecting on aspects of identity as an educator for inclusion and social justice

As an educator for inclusion and social justice, it is essential to be self-reflective about all aspects of identity that relate diversity differential power relations. part this commitment, I am a group critical academics practitioners who comprise the South African Education Research Association (SAERA) Special Interest Group on Self-Reflexive Methodologies. In paper, include reflections two artworks created during self-reflexive exercises using visual methodologies. The first artwork led my interrogating meaning as white person in post-apartheid Africa. What emerged was, first, need confront privileged racial had been fashioned divided exclusive past second, needed reposition myself beyond socialisation, recognising possibility new frames understanding identities, spaces, communities historical differences keep Africans separated alienated. Critical reflection second reveals embedded commentary challenge patriarchal articulations professional dominant discourses learning teaching academia. was how lost feminine knowledge could inform strategies. These strategies then contribute pedagogy challenges prevailing system relations disrupts unsettles stereotypical assumptions masculine discourse Here, highlight effectiveness methodologies explore various identity, especially relevant educators transformative agents educating justice.
